Alfalfa is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the pea family, cultivated as an important forage crop in many countries around the world. Roots are deeply penetrating taproot system. Stems procumbent, ascending to erect, arising from a woody base, stipules triangular; pubescent on lower surface, glabrous on upper surface, coarsely toothed; petiole long; pubescent, leaflets narrow, oblong to ovate or obovate, dentate near apex, glabrous on upper surface, slightly pubescent on lower surface. Inflorescences in dense racemes with 10-35 flowers, on peduncles long; pedicel 1.5-2 mm long; calyx 5-lobed, tube and pointed teeth about equal in length; corolla purple or blue, rarely white. Pod curled, indehiscent, not spined, containing 2-6 seeds. Seeds yellow to brown, kidney-shaped to ovoid. It is native to central and western Asia and the eastern Mediterranean region but was originally found in Medea, Spain, Italy and France.
