Garlic (Allium sativum)
Allium sativum plant is closely related to and similar to onions but stronger odor. Garlic is a bulbous perennial plant. It grows up to 1.2 m (4 ft) in height and it grows from an underground bulb which sends shoots up in the air. It produces hermaphrodite flowers. Bulb ovoid with 6-10 bulblets; a papery coating and fibrous roots; scales white. Scapes c. 1 in tall, curved; spathe long-beaked. Leaves linear, flattened. Umbels with bulbils and flowers. Tepals white, lanceolate, acuminate. Filaments shorter than the tepals, inner with 2 cusps. Pollination occurs by bees and other insects.
