Mongolian milkvetch plant has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 2000 years. It has been used to delay aging in human as well as reduce signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines. Cycloastragenol (CAG) is a triterpenoid saponin compound derived from the root of Milkvetch that is main active ingredient. The mechanisms of CAG include:

(i) Increasing telomerase activity

Cycloastragenol is identified as a telomerase activator that plays a role in increasing the length of telomeres. Telomeres are protective caps composed of nucleotide repeats at the end of chromosomes. These telomeres shorten with every cell division, which results in cell senescence and degradation. The extreme shortening of telomeres is associated with aging, death and other age-related disorders. The telomerase enzyme is able to increase the length of these telomeres, thus preventing DNA damage.

(ii) Fighting oxidative stress

Oxidative stress leads to the development of aging-related issues. If not controlled, oxidative stress can accelerate the aging process leading to chronic conditions such as cancer, cardiac disorder and diabetes. CAG is an excellent antioxidant compound that improves the capacity of naturally existing antioxidants. This helps delay aging and prevents the occurrence of age-related disorders.

(iii) Inhibiting formation of glycation

Glycation products are non-enzymatic proteins associated with tissue aging after oxidation. This is one of the biomarkers for diabetes and has been associated with aging and other disorders. CAG eliminates the aging effects of glycation by hindering the formation of Glycation Terminal Products (GTPs).

(iv) Protecting photo-aging from UV rays

Scientific studies show that CAG protects the skin from harmful effects of UV rays. CAG inhibits metalloproteinases which encourage tissue breakdown and lower levels of collagen in the body. It also acts by reducing the level of beta-galactosidase (aging marker), an enzyme induced by UV rays.
Chitosan could theoretically enhance the bioavailability of cycloastragenol due to its mucoadhesive properties, ability to open tight junction and controlled release capability.

Adult – one capsule two times daily on empty stomach
