Echinacea purpurea is the most potent ancient herbal medicine for natural immunity, anti-inflammatory and antiallergy. This plant is cultivated in Shan State, Myanmar.
Pharmacological actions:
1. Immunostimulating effect
Echinacea stimulates the non-specific immune system, resulting an increase in phagocytosis. Arabinogalactan, a highly purified polysaccharides from the constituents of Echinacea is effective in activating macrophage cytotoxic actions against micro-organisms. In addition, the polysaccharides have an anti-hyaluronidase action thus may be lessened the spread of infectious agent in the body.
2. Antiviral effect
Echinacea has some short term viral resistance against influenza, herpes, vesicular stomatitis virus and others. It inhibits the induction of multiple proinflammatory cytokines by respiratory viruses.
3. Anti-inflammatory effect
The constituents of Echinacea contain polyunsaturated alkamides which exert anti-inflammatory effects through inhibition of cyclooxygenase and 5-lipoxygenase. The polysaccharide portion has direct anti-inflammatory effects.
