Pharmacological actions:
Chitosan displays cationic properties which enable it to bind fatty acids via electrostatic forces. Positively charged chitosan binds to negatively charged fat, bile acids and cholesterol in the intestine and prevents fat absorption. The complexes form between chitosan and fats are excreted in the faeces without digestion. Consumption of chitosan has a beneficial effect by reducing body weight, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and glucose and increasing cholesterol excretion.

In addition to this, modulation of adipokines by chitosan may be one of the mechanisms for weight loss. Adipokines include leptin, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP). It decreases dietary intake which is associated with increased serum leptin concentrations and decreased CRP concentrations. Leptin is known to have a role in appetite suppression.

Dosage:
Adult – two to four capsules three times daily half an hour before meal

Side effects:
Occasionally gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, loose motion and mild steatorrhea have been reported.

Contraindications:
It is contraindicated in people with allergies to shellfish and must not be used in patients taking anticoagulant.

Drug interaction:
It should not be consumed within 2 hours of taking fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K and lipophilic drugs.
