Luteolin
Anti-tumor
Composition:
Each capsule contains
Thymus vulgaris extract containing Luteolin …………… 100 mg
Pharmacological actions:
Anti-tumour activity
A group of scientists from the Kaohsiung Medical University of Taiwan tested luteolin against five human hepatoma cell lines, namely HepG2, SK-Hep-1, PLC/PRF/5, Hep3B, and HA22T/VGH, with XTT assay and flow cytometry. The results showed that luteolin inhibited HCC cells not only by cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase but also by apoptosis.
Lowering glucose absorption
Luteolin inhibits alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase suggesting that it can suppress postprandial hyperglycemia in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The anti-diabetic property of luteolin was reported by Zarzuelo et al 1996 where a significant decrease in glycemic levels (>50%), a 2.5-fold increase in insulin blood levels and elevated pancreatic insulin were observed.
Healthy weight maintenance
Scientific studies showed that luteolin increased peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma) protein expression to attenuate hepatic lipotoxicity, which links to the improvement in circulating fatty acid (FA) levels by enhancing FA uptake genes and lipogenic genes and proteins in adipose tissue. It also upregulated the expression of genes controlling lipolysis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle prior to lipid droplet formation, thereby reducing adiposity. Increased consumption of dietary flavonoids eg. luteolin was associated with weight maintenance.
